*Player Piano!*
21 Piano Solos by T. Matthew Phillips, Esq.
About the Harmonies.
The music is set to a three-note accompaniment — played by the left-hand pinky, index finger, and thumb — with intervals consisting of two perfect fifths, (or occasionally, diminished or augmented fifths). Played repetitiously, these three-note, left-hand arpeggios produce a machine-like pulse evocative of antique music boxes; when played with the sustain pedal, they produce quirky and wondrous harmonies.
About the Rhythym.
“Player Piano” is a collection of piano solos reminiscent of a bygone era. All 21 pieces are set in triple meter with straight or syncopated waltz rhythms — with mood swings ranging from gothic to romantic, impressionistic to neo-realistic. All pieces are approx. three minutes in length. Performance of the set runs just over an hour.
About the Composer.
A native of Los Angeles, Calif., Phillips studied classical Spanish guitar and contemporary music composition at Cal. State Northridge. Having performed music the world over, Phillips is a member of the Las Vegas Blues Society and Friend of the Gustav Mahler Society of New York.
